Eid-e-Ghadeer: The essence of Hajjat-ul-wida

Eid-e-Ghadeer marks the last sermon of the Prophet (P.B.U.H) on Hajjat-ul-wida. The day is widely celebrated among the Shia Muslims. kaabaAlthough the Sunni Muslims don’t deny the incident but don’t celebrate it as an ‘occasion’ more specifically as ‘Eid’. For me its not about the difference in opinion but purely about the importance of the event. Whether I choose to celebrate the incident or not is not important. What’s important is the remembrance of the event and its essence. The last sermon of the Prophet (P.B.U.H) holds great importance. It is one of those moments when the Prophet delivered one of his most vital messages to the Ummah. Hazrat Muhammad (P.B.U.H)’s life is like an open book with accounts of the most tiny details. Its therefore considered essential for Muslims worldwide to follow his footsteps.

The words of the Prophet (P.B.UH)  are the source of inspiration for millions of Muslims worldwide. The tales of his lifestyle stir motivation and mend ideologies for the Muslim Ummah. Hazrat Muhammad (P.B.U.H)’s wisaal marked the completion of the words from Allah (wahi) and the completion of our Deen.

The Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H ) was known for his honesty and decision making skills even among his enemies. Throughout his life he laid great emphasis on the unity of the Ummah. He bore through great pain in order to set an example for his Ummah. The life of the Prophet (P.B.U.H) urges every Muslim to stay firm and united. Yet as we look around we see divisions under the banners of names and incidents. It is strange the same Ummah is divided amongst each other. The true essence of the Prophet (P.BU.H)’s life seems lost in the world we live in today.

The Ummah today as the Prophet (P.B.U.H) feared has fallen at the hands of fitnah. The simplicity of our deen has been deemed complex and incompatible. It saddens me deeply when I realize what we have become. It is like the life of the Prophet (P.B.U.H) has been forgotten. His teachings, patience, tolerance and unimaginable sufferings urge us to come to common terms with each other. The true teachings of Islam talk about unity and being together in front of one lord. Unfortunately even with the life of the Prophet (P.B.U.H) in front of us like an open book we continue to have reservations and differences in opinions.

On this day while remembering the last sermon of the Prophet (P.B.U.H) I pray for the unity of the Ummah which is scattered to bits at present. It is not possible for us to fight the enemy while we continue to hold differences among each other.Nor is it  for us to fight amongst each other and deny the message of Quran.  Neither it is  for one Muslim to consider the other as any less than him in the matters of faith. Last and foremost it is not for us to judge others in matters of religion, somethings are better left for ALLAH to decide and judge. For me the conflict ends here:

And hold fast, all of you together, to the Rope of Allâh (i.e. this Qur’ân), and be not divided among yourselves, and remember Allâh’s Favour on you, for you were enemies one to another but He joined your hearts together, so that, by His Grace, you became brethren (in Islâmic Faith), and you were on the brink of a pit of Fire, and He saved you from it. Thus Allâh makes His Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.,) clear to you, that you may be guided.

The Noble Qur’an 3:103, 105

Let’s not overshadow the true essence of Islam and the teachings of our beloved Prophet (P.B.UH). For all the Muslims Eid-e-ghadeer Mubarak!  may all of us make this day a source of remembrance of the true essence of unity amongst each other.
